Cape-to-Cairo

The Victoria Falls Hotel was built by the British in 1904 with the original idea being housing for workers on the Cape-to-Cairo railway.

In conversation with his friend, Sir Charles Metcalfe, Cecil Rhodes had a vision of a railway system stretching from the Cape to Cairo.
Metcalfe was subsequently commissioned to oversee the development.

And Rhodes was insistent that the first bridge should cross the mighty Zambezi.
River at a place where the spray from the falls would fall on the passing trains.

Today the “grand old lady” of the Falls remains a testament to the elegance of the era in which it was built.   As a grand luxury hotel the Victoria falls Hotel is an iconic landmark steeped in history  and one of the oldest Hotels in Africa.
