Sossusvlei is located in the Namib Naukluft Park, the largest conservation area in Africa and fourth in the world.
Sesriem Canyon
this natural feature of the area is a deep chasm and a much needed water source for humans and animals alike.
It was the early settlers in search of water that had to use six buckets (ses) and leather thongs (riem), in order to reach the bottom of the deep cleft.
Namib Naukluft Park
framed by rugged rocky mountains and wide sparsely covered plains, the park is an ecological protected area.
To the west of the park lies the Namib and to the east, the Kalahari desert. As well as Hartmann’s mountain zebra, duiker, steenbok, bat-eared foxes and kudu can be found.
