The bear-like owner of Musango was warden for Matusadona Park for many years.

Twenty years ago, he set up his own safari business and finally built Musango – the camp of his dreams. He is also chief guide, leading his guests on walking safaris while Wendy, his wife, runs the camp

Here, whether you are tracking black rhino on foot, star-gazing in the clear Kariba skies or sneaking up on a herd of buffalo, a walk with Steve is a revelation. “There is so much more to the bush than what you read about or see on television,” he says. “My job as a guide and wildlife enthusiast is to introduce you to its wonders.”

Summer (September to November)
Temperatures: min. +/- 18°C, max. +/- 45°C

Wet Season: December to March
Lightweight, comfortable, cool clothing, with a set of neutral/dark bush colours for walks. (nothing white, light or bright) For cruising, canoeing, fishing and village trips, wear whatever you are comfortable in. For walks, you will require some good worn-in walking shoes or boots. For other activities and relaxing in camp you only require comfortable footwear, sandals or trainers. Wet months bring a light rain jacket.

Winter (June to August) Temperatures: min: +/-10°C, max. +/-30°C

As above but include a track-suit, sweater or a light jacket for early morning, evening boat rides, and for dinner. A pair of lightweight long trousers/slacks would be handy for the evening

Getting There:

By light aircraft charter from Harare, Kariba or Victoria Falls to Bumi Hills Airstrip + a short transfer by boat to the island

By speedboat, direct from Kariba to Musango – approx. 1.5 hours
By 4×4 – varied scenic routes – 8 hrs from Vic Falls, 7hrs from Harare
